Are schools making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)?

K-5 School AYP Status 2004 K-5 School AYP Status 2005
6-8 School AYP Status 2004 6-8 School AYP Status 2005
9-12 School AYP Status 2004 9-12 School AYP Status 2005

These maps represent school-level Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status for the three accountability level groups (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12). Status is determined based on performance on the Arkansas Benchmark and End-of-Course Exams.

Methodology

For each school, the total number of non-mobile students proficient on the 4th, 6th, 8th Grade Benchmark Exam and the Algebra, Geometry, and Literacy End-of-Course exams was identified. This number was divided by the total number of non-mobile students in the district attempting these exams to produce a school-level Percent Proficient for both literacy and mathematics. This methodology was repeated for the following student groups: African-American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Economically Disadvantaged, Limited English proficient and Special Education. For each of these groups the percent proficient was compared to the state-determined percent proficient required to meet AYP. Schools were required to have a minimum of 40 students in a group for that group to be assigned a status. If a group did not meet the AYP standard, but showed growth from the previous year, and if at least 95% of the students in that group were assessed, then Safe Harbor was applied to the group's status. The status of the lowest-performing group was assigned to the school as per NCLB requirements.

Schools who met the standards are identified by a green flag, schools who did not meet the standards are identified by a yellow flag, and schools who have not met the standards for two or more years are met the standards are identified by a red flag.

Examples

  1. A school where greater than 40.16% of K-5 students were proficient on the literacy exam for the 2003-2004 school year will be colored green on the K-5 Literacy map.
  2. A school where less than 40.16% of K-5 students were proficient on the literacy exam for the 2003-2004 and where less than 34.18% of the K-5 students were proficient on the literacy exam for the 2002-2003 school year will be colored red on the K-5 Literacy map.

Interpretation of the School AYP Status Charts

Interpretation of the School AYP Status Charts This GAPS plot reveals that K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 schools in the northwest region of the state are more likely to have met AYP standards for the 2003-2004 school year than other schools throughout the state. The implication of this finding is that schools in the southwest region of the state are more likely to be in School Improvement, which requires financial support from the state.
